If you want to pursue a career in teaching you will want to follow the following five points:

  • Expectations. Make sure that you realize that you will be held at a higher level of expectation. Not only will your boss and colleagues expect high from you but the parents of the children you are teaching will expect a high and quality teaching level from you.
  • Time. When you want to become a teacher you will need to realize that it will take up a valuable portion of your time. When you are not teaching in the classroom you will be at home making lesson plans and grading papers. You will also have to put a lot of effort in teaching your students each day and making sure that they succeed.
  • Pay. A teacher can make anywhere from $25,000 to $60,000 a year depending on what level of teaching and the institution where he or she is working at. Teachers are not highly paid but the rewards from teaching your students are great.
  • Emotions. When you become a teacher you will quickly feel emotionally attached to your student. You will have to be able to make this commitment to your students or you will not be able to succeed in your goals at becoming a teacher. This is especially true for a teacher that is teaching younger children or special needs children.

If you decide that teaching is right for you, you will need to get a teaching degree. There are several different types of degrees that are required depending on what kind of teacher you want to be. Teaching degrees can be taken at colleges and universities as well as several different online universities out there. The options for a teaching degree are:

  • Doctor of Education
  • Bachelor of Education
  • Master of Education

A Bachelor of Education is the basic degree that the state will require in order to teach in schools. Most people can become a teacher with this type of degree and teach at elementary schools, middle schools and high schools wherever they are at in the United States.  The requirements will vary from state to state and in states like New York teachers will have to have a Master’s degree in education. Getting a graduate degree will allow you to move further up the ladder in teaching even rising to the principal level and higher.
