One of the most sought after career paths in the United States is the nursing field. Nursing is a very high demand job with most states across the country begging nurses to come and hire on with them. Going to school and becoming a nurse can set you up with a great degree that will allow you to find a quality nursing position anywhere in the country that you want to work. Nurses make a great income so not only will you be job secure but you will also be financially secure.
Nursing has several options that you can choose to get into. The following are the most common route for someone who wants to become a nurse:
- Master of Science in Nursing.
- Associate’s Degree in Nursing
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
If you choose to go with an Associate’s degree in nursing you will be able to become a nurse in just 2 years. You will go to college or a vocational school where you will earn your Associate’s degree. This degree is the minimum required for you to become a registered nurse. Many employers though will prefer it if you have higher knowledge and a Bachelor’s degree in nursing. During the Bachelor’s degree you will go and take four years of college that are complete with clinicals that will allow you to experience how nursing will be in a real life setting. No matter what degree you pursue whether it be the two or four year at the end of each degree in order to become a nurse you will have to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. This will be the only way for you to be hired as a nurse.
A Master’s degree for nursing allows you to increase your pay by getting a promotion and you will be able to get a higher position within the nursing field. Many choose to pursue this while working as a nurse to make sure that they are making money while further educating themselves. Pursue a Master’s degree in nursing if you would like these nursing positions:
- Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist
- Advanced Practice Nurse
- Nurse Practitioner
Nurses that choose these higher career paths typically have a greater authority presence and have a much higher pay than nurses with lower degrees. Nursing in this area can also allow you to choose programs such as clinical nursing and even forensic nursing.
There is one final choice when going to get a nursing degree and that is to get a Doctorate in nursing. While not typically for a normal registered nurse or nurse who is going to work in the clinical field a Doctorate in nursing will allow you to teach nursing in a college or other teaching setting or if you wish to research the medical field it will allow you to become a researcher.
If you want to become a nurse as you can see there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Sit down and take your time to figure out which career path in nursing is right for you.
