How is the teacher-student interaction scheduled?

a) There are full-time courses and part-time courses. The part-time courses are the ones which allow the student to select learning sessions at which s/he will be free. Suitable for working class students. On full-time courses the institution schedule the time for teaching the courses and the student is expected to avail him/herself as per the set out timetable.

How do the students interact with each other and their teachers?

a) Asynchronous – Here is whereby the interaction of the teacher-student is not done at the same time; they each participate in convenience of their own schedule.
b) Synchronous – Here is whereby the teacher and student will interact online at the same time and in real time.
c) Blended/Hybrid – This arrangement is whereby the instructor and the student interact both virtually over the internet and in person/physically which could be in an actual classroom.

What are the benefits of online education?

It increases the range of courses a single/small school can offer to its students especially those located in rural or remote areas. If a learning institution lacks or has shortage in qualified teachers in a particular course they could hire a teacher online cheaply. It works to the advantage of the student’s schedule conflicting with the normal learning schedule. For students who are homebound for various reasons they could still catch up with the rest of the class and submit assignments.

Is there a need for a special software and computer required for online education?

All you will need are the basic computer, operating system (Mac OS, Window 98 to latest versions) and application software (Ms-Office 2003 or its equivalent, Adobe Acrobat Reader, macromedia flash player and a CD-Rom drive in addition, a decent reliable internet connection. Perhaps hardware such as a webcam and a microphone could also come in pretty handy too.

What are the learning resources available to online students?

All the institutions offering online learning provide for an online portal referred to as OpenSpace, from which the student can access reading materials, submit assignments, join fellow student in discussion forums or engage with their instructors on the topics being taught.
